The Complete House Shifting Checklist for 2026 (Week by Week)
Most moving stress comes from doing things at the wrong time — booking movers too late, packing kitchens too early, or forgetting meter readings until you have left. This checklist, refined over 15 years and 1,800+ moves by Suman Packers & Movers, breaks your relocation into a calm week-by-week plan. Follow it and moving day will feel like a supervised routine instead of a crisis.
4 Weeks Before Moving Day
- Decide your moving date and shortlist 2–3 packers and movers; book a free survey with each.
- Compare written quotations — check what packing materials, labour and transport are included.
- Start decluttering: sell, donate or discard items you have not used in a year. Every kilogram you drop reduces your bill.
- If you live in a rented home, give written notice to your landlord and photograph the current condition of the flat.
- If moving into a society, ask for the move-in rules, gate-pass format and service-lift booking procedure.
- If children change schools, start the transfer-certificate process now — schools are slower than movers.
2 Weeks Before Moving Day
- Confirm your mover in writing and lock the date, crew size, vehicle and final price.
- Order packing for special items: wooden crating for glass tables, anti-static boxes for computers, extra padding for TVs.
- Use up frozen food, cleaning liquids and open containers — movers should not pack them.
- Service appliances you will carry: AC gas removal and reinstallation, washing-machine drum bolting, refrigerator defrosting.
- Book leave at work, arrange children's and pets' care for moving day, and plan your own travel to the new city.
1 Week Before Moving Day
- Pack (or ask your mover to pack) non-daily-use rooms: books, décor, spare linens, seasonal clothes.
- Label every carton by room and contents — 'Kitchen 3: Mixer, jars' beats 'Kitchen misc' every time.
- Separate the 'essentials bag': 2 days of clothes, chargers, medicines, toiletries, snacks, important documents and some cash.
- Close or transfer utilities — electricity, water, gas, internet — and note final meter readings with photos.
- Update your address for bank, cards, insurance, Aadhaar-linked services and subscriptions.
Moving Day
- Keep the essentials bag, documents and jewellery with you personally — never on the truck.
- Walk the supervisor through fragile and high-value items before packing starts.
- Check the inventory list as cartons are loaded; sign it only when everything on it matches reality.
- Note the truck number, driver name and coordinator's contact before the vehicle departs.
- Do a final sweep of every room, cupboard, loft and balcony — then take meter photos and hand over keys.
After the Move
- Count cartons against the inventory before unloading begins; report anything unusual immediately.
- Direct the crew room-by-room using your labels — unpack essentials first, beds second, décor last.
- Check appliances and electronics by plugging in within 24 hours so any transit issue is reported early.
- Verify that gas, water, electricity and internet are active at the new home.
- Leave an honest review for your mover — it keeps the industry honest for the next family.
